Abia Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Chaka Chukwumerije, Escapes Assassination Attempt

Umuahia, Abia State – The Abia State Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Chaka Chukwumerije, narrowly escaped death two nights ago following a brazen gun attack along the Okigwe-Umuahia highway.

Chukwumerije was reportedly returning to Umuahia from Okigwe with three others when unidentified gunmen in a trailing vehicle opened fire on them. Despite the car being riddled with bullets, all four occupants, including the Commissioner, escaped unharmed.

Family sources described the incident as a “miraculous escape” and expressed gratitude to God for sparing the lives of those involved. They also called attention to the increasing dangers faced by public servants who are committed to integrity and reform.

Chukwumerije, who was appointed Commissioner for Lands and Housing by Governor Alex Otti in 2023, is widely known for his dedication to service and principled approach to governance. His family noted that he has devoted himself entirely to his role, often at the expense of personal comfort and family life.

“My brother has buried himself in his work,” a relative said. “He has not taken anything that is not his. He is focused on contributing meaningfully to the transformation of Abia under Governor Otti. That someone like him could be targeted is both heartbreaking and alarming.”

The family highlighted Chukwumerije’s long-standing support for Governor Otti, having actively participated in every election campaign since 2015. Despite setbacks in the past, he remained loyal and dignified, never engaging in divisive or bitter politics.

In the past two years, the Otti-led administration has received praise for infrastructural reforms, improved governance, and transparency—efforts in which Chukwumerije has played a key role through his portfolio in Lands and Housing.

The attack has triggered widespread condemnation, with many calling for increased security measures to protect public officials, especially those working in high-risk sectors or involved in critical reforms.

As at press time, no official statement had been released by the Abia State Government or the State Police Command, but investigations into the attack are expected to commence immediately.
