Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has taken a swipe at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, faulting his administration’s handling of the economy and the rising hunger crisis in the country.

In a strongly worded post on his verified Facebook handle, Obi recalled how Tinubu, while campaigning in Delta State in November 2022, mocked him for relying on data and statistics during political debates. Tinubu, without mentioning Obi’s name, had said, “Na statistics we go chop? All I want is to put food on the table of Nigerians.”

However, Obi noted that two years into Tinubu’s four-year tenure, the reality on the ground paints a starkly different picture. According to him, Nigeria is now classified among the hungriest nations in the world, with millions of citizens struggling daily to find their next meal.

He accused President Tinubu of now “overfeeding Nigerians with wrong statistics,” citing manipulated unemployment figures, questionable inflation data, and a controversial GDP rebasing — all of which he said were being used to spin a false narrative of economic progress despite worsening living conditions.

“Governance is not rocket science. It’s not a gamble,” Obi wrote. “Like I have always reiterated, it requires sincerity of purpose, character, competence, capacity, and compassion.”
