Gunmen Renew Attacks in Parts of Imo State; Kill Commuters, Set Vehicles Ablaze |#93.3Ikorofm
Tension is rising in parts of Imo State following a deadly attack by unidentified gunmen who killed several travellers and set multiple vehicles on fire along the Okigwe-Owerri road.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, with the attackers operating in three separate groups. They blocked the highway between Umunna in Onuimo Local Government Area and parts of Okigwe LGA at around 5:00 AM.
Eyewitnesses reported heavy gunfire as the assailants shot sporadically, causing panic in the area. At least eight vehicles, including trucks and motorcycles, were set ablaze during the ambush. Numerous trucks were engulfed in flames while shocked bystanders looked on helplessly.
The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the attack. According to the Command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, a joint operation involving the police and other security agencies has been launched to track down the perpetrators.
He stated, “The gunmen blocked the highway at three different points, shooting sporadically and creating chaos. We are on their trail and will ensure those responsible face justice.”
The exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed at the time of this report. The attack has raised renewed concerns over insecurity in the South-East region, prompting residents to call for urgent intervention from the federal and state governments.
