Niger Junta Cuts Ties with Nigeria, US, France, Togo After ECOWAS Ultimatum
The military junta in Niger Republic has cut off ties with Nigeria, the United States, France, and Togo after the efforts of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to resolve the ongoing impasse failed.
ECOWAS had issued a seven-day ultimatum for the reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum to avoid possible clash with the junta. However, the junta refused to back down, and the ties between Niger and the four countries were severed.
This is a significant development, as it shows that the junta is not willing to compromise. It also raises the possibility of further tensions between Niger and ECOWAS.
The US has thrown its weight behind ECOWAS’ efforts to reinstate Bazoum, and has called for his immediate release. The US has also said that it will work with ECOWAS to impose sanctions on the junta if it does not comply with the ultimatum.
It remains to be seen how the situation in Niger will develop. However, it is clear that the junta is not backing down, and that the standoff could have serious implications for the region.
